Access to reliable, fast, and effective COVID-19 testing services is the need of the hour.

This calls for robust testing practices that have proven to be incredibly beneficial in curbing the rapid spread of the disease. Thanks to advanced medical technologies, several types of Coronavirus tests are now available in the market. From same day PCR to next day PCR, you can avail any type of COVID-19 test that best suits your needs.

The world has also experienced a shortage of testing kits. There was a massive supply-demand gap that fueled the spread. Absence of easily accessible testing services soon become a challenge for many countries across the globe. Distinctive samples are taken in each test to identify the mutating nature and hallmarks of the novel coronavirus.

In this detailed blog post, we take a look at the difference between the two main types of COVID-19 tests known as RT-PCR and real time RT-PCR. We’ll also help you gauge the best test suited for your family’s or organization’s needs.

Why Are Diagnostics Tests Important

Before we dive into the PCR tests, we’d like to shed light on the importance of COVID-19 diagnostics tests. Organizations like the WHO, FDA, and CDC claimed that rapid testing policies have effectively curbed COVID-19 spread. Getting people tested is the best way to identify potential cases.

A diagnostic test helps detect whether you’ve contracted the disease. This results in timely isolation and quarantine, thereby leading to lower chances of spreading the virus.

Today, almost over one year into the pandemic, we have different types of COVID-19 tests that can be divided into two parts: Antibody and Antigen tests. In each test, the medical worker uses a different sample collection technique. The most common type of sample is referred to as the swab sample. A long Q-Tip like stick is used to collect a sample from your nose or throat.

The swab sample technique can be further classified into four types:

Anterior Nares

Nares means nasal. In this technique, the medical worker takes a sample by inserting a swab into your nostrils

Mid-Turbinate

Mid-turbinate is slightly painful than the previous one. This sample is taken from further up inside a person’s nostrils.

Nasopharyngeal

This is considered the most effective way to collect a sample for COVID-19 test; this technique uses a swab inserted all the way to the back of your throat through the nostrils. You might feel a slight discomfort; however, the process is quick and doesn’t cause abrasions.

Oropharyngeal

This type of sample is collected from the pharynx—a part of your throat just behind the mouth.

In addition to nasal samples, saliva samples are also used to detect the presence of Coronavirus. This sample is easy to collect. It requires the person to spit on the swab. You may have heard about blood samples as well, but these are only collected at a clinic or for the antibody testing facility.

Now that you’re brushed up on the importance of diagnostic tests, let’s get into the what, why, when, and how of PCR AKA Polymerase Chain Reaction COVID-19 tests.

What is a PCR test?

In biological terms, a Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test is used to amplify and detect genetic material present in a person’s saliva or nasal sample. Compared to other genetic amplification techniques, a PCR test is less time-consuming but effective.

The two most important genetic molecules detected using a PCR test are known as Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) and Ribonucleic Acid (RNA). While many traditional genetic sequence detection tools are available in the market, a PCR test is found more effective, especially for detecting COVID-19.

The “RT” in RT-PCR tests stands for Reverse Transcription. When performing a lab procedure on RT-PCR samples, a nasopharyngeal sample is added to the test-tube. This substance develops numerous copies of the viral RNA that may be present in the sample.

Excess copies of a viral RNA results in a positive result. The RT-PCR tests is designed to prime and probe genetic molecules in a sample. An RT-PCR test also allows lab workers to get a clearer picture of the exact intensity of COVID-19 molecules.

Viruses such as the SARS-CoV-2 are RNA based. They can only be detected in a sample if there’s adequate infiltration of healthy cells. Once the virus comes in contact with healthy cells, it multiplies. COVID-19 can reprogram the cellular composition inside the human body and spread by copying viral RNA particles within seconds.

PCR tests are conducted to detect the presence of a viral RNA molecule. This genetic substance can be detected inside a human body before the Coronavirus has entered it. Therefore, detecting a viral RNA is a good way to tell whether someone has already been affected by the disease. This type of test is considered the gold standard in the times of Coronavirus.

The Sars-COV-2 is not simple RNA-virus. It’s constantly mutating and nullifying the test results obtained from traditional techniques. This is where the PCR comes into play.

The best part about a PCR test is that it can be conducted at home, in your car, at a laboratory, or clinics. Its turnaround time usually varies from one to three days. Early on, when the pandemic was at its prime, people faced extreme delays in results due to high demand.

What is a Real Time RT–PCR?

With rapid advances in the COVID-19 testing practices, medical researchers developed a real time RT-PCR test. The main difference between a traditional and real time PCR is that the latter is a nuclear-derived process. It detects the presence of a specific genetic molecule. The real time RT-PCR test identifies viral molecules in any kind of infectious pathogen.

This method was originally used to create markers for radioactive particles in the genetic materials. Now it has been refined to detect more complex viral RNAs. The real time RT-PCR test proved extremely effective in checking the current progress of Coronavirus inside an infected person.

The testing kits for real time RT–PCR were initially not accessible to general public. It was limited to healthcare workers and people employed at more vulnerable places. Many countries have used this test to detect complicated diseases like the Ebola virus and Zika virus. Thanks to mass production facilities, it’s being adopted for rapid COVID-19 detection at a national capacity.

Why Use Real Time PCR Test?

The real time RT-PCR test is more time-effective than traditional PCR test. It can provide prompt results with three hours of sample collection, allowing people to isolate if they’re COVID-19 positive. Ultimately, this leads to lower spread rate.

Along with the progression in health diagnosis, nucleic acid based COVID-19 detection techniques have become a rapid and reliable technology. It also has a lower potential of showing false positives and negatives. Since quick genetic mutation has been noticed in novel Coronavirus, the real time RT-PCR targets multiple genes to eliminate invalid results.

However, a real time PCR test can’t detect past infections. This is very important to monitor the development of virus in a community or a group of people. It can also help healthcare workers track and curb Coronavirus cases.

When to Get Tested for COVID-19?

Now that you understand the key differences between the traditional and real time PCR tests, here’s a list of all the signs that indicate you need to get tested for COVID-19 ASAP:

  • If you have one or more Coronavirus symptoms before or after the vaccination

  • If you’ve been in close contact with an infected person for over fifteen minutes

  • If you’ve participated in activities that might’ve put you at a risk of catching the virus

  • If you’re experiencing flu and fever like symptoms after a travel trip, an event, or a public gathering

For organizations, we strongly recommend a well-managed and controlled screening program. This shall include symptom tracking, rapid COVID testing, and implementation of standard SOPs before and after vaccinations.

You can contact us at Good Hearts Testing for reliable COVID-19 vaccination consultation today.

Understanding Your Test Results

After getting tested for COVID-19, many people face difficulties in understanding their test results.

PCR tests tend to provide a clear-cut, accurate result for COVID-19. But there’s also a possibility that your test may show a false negative or a false positive.

Getting a result on a false account doesn’t actually state that you haven’t contracted COVID-19 at all. There’s a chance that you might be affected but the viral RNA isn’t strong enough to show up on the test results.

If you’re experiencing COVID-19 symptoms but have received a negative report, keep practicing preventive measures.

Don’t forget the importance of maintaining social distancing, sanitizing hands, and wearing a mask in public. It’s better to stay at home and spend a 14-day quarantine period if you’re sick. For further information, contact your healthcare services provider to receive appropriate medication and treatment.

At a drive-thruCOVID testing facility, passengers and drivers can get tested without getting out of their vehicles. This innovative testing procedure has helped communities curb the spread of virus that might occur at a walk-in testing facility.

Drive-thru is fast, convenient, and as reliable as walk-in and at-home tests. It has also proven successful in meeting the high testing demand. A large number of people can be tested quickly without worrying about SOP violation or virus transmission.

HOWEVER, the COVID-19 test conductors are required to wear proper PPE, masks, face shields, and gloves as they have to collect nasal or oral samples. COVID drive-thru testing has undeniably helped the government improve surveillance and reduce the burden on emergency rooms.

Here’s a complete rundown of what happens at a COVID drive-thru testing facility and how to go about your upcoming visit.

Arrival at a Drive-Thru COVID Testing Center

COVID-19 testing practices ramped up as the pandemic raged through Miami. People were encouraged to stay home but get immediately tested upon experiencing COVID-19 related symptoms.

In an effort to increase the testing capacity, many state and private medical organizations started setting up drive-thru testing facilities. Several private labs played an important role in providing adequate testing resources such as PPE, testing kits, and sample storage units.

When a car passenger arrives at a COVID drive-thru testing center, they’re guided by road signs. This keeps the vehicle queue in order and maintains discipline. A series of cones are set up guiding the cars toward the testing booth. You’re advised to keep your windows rolled up and wear masks at all times.

Screening Point

There might be more than one screening points at a drive-thru testing center. The first one is usually set up to conduct a thorough screening process. Prior to screening, you’re asked to show your appointment receipt and doctor’s confirmation. Moving further, you’ll have to show your ID photo and insurance card as well. This completed the screening procedure.

Getting Tested

The last part is to get tested. Testing is usually done at a separate booth where a lab technician awaits your arrival. He’ll ask you to roll down the window just a little bit. You would have to tilt your head back, and the lab worker will insert a swab inside your nose. Once they’re done taking samples, you can roll up the window and drive off.

The collected samples are stored in well sterilized and temperature-controlled container. They’re sent to the lab for detection of possible COVID-19 viral RNA.

Drive thru COVID testing first emerged in Korea where mass testing was implemented as a primary strategy to check the transmission rate. The idea was to promote testing for fast and effective prevention of the pandemic. Over time, the American Government also adopted the strategy and it has now become one of the easiest COVID testing practice.

Most medical tests require you to be prepared beforehand. Similarly, the COVID-19 testing procedure also requires you to take a few measures before the test.

Luckily, you don’t have to fast beforehand or avoid any specific activities that might influence the test results. However, there are a few aspects you ought to be careful about. Here’s how anyone can prepare for a Covid-19 test.

Things to Keep for Your COVID-19 Test

These are some of the items to keep with you when going for a COVID-19 test:

  • Put on a mask to cover your face at all times and prevent catching or spreading the virus.

  • Keep some forms of identification, including your ID card and driver’s license.

  • If you have health insurance, keep relevant information.

  • Some testing sites might require prescriptions and referrals.

  • There might be waiting time due to long queues, so pack a bottle of water and some healthy snacks.

  • Any of your required medication or prescriptions.

  • Any handheld device or a book to keep you occupied during the long waiting times.

  • If you’re bringing children along, bring some toys or tings to keep them entertained.

  • Phone charger, to ensure that you don’t run out of batteries and stay connected with the online world.

What to Avoid for Your COVID-19 test

Some of the things you shouldn’t be doing when going for a COVID-19 test:

  • Since, there’s a risk of contracting COVID-19 at the testing centers, only those that are getting tested for COVID-19 should come along with you, including children.

  • Getting tested too quickly. It would be best if you waited at least five days or so for symptoms to develop before you get tested.

  • Heading to a hospital emergency room for testing.

You may head to hospital emergency if:

  • You’ve already been tested positive for Coronavirus.

  • You have difficulty breathing, along with persistent chest pain, leaving a blue tint on your lips or face due to a lack of oxygen.

Book A Session

Booking a COVID-19 testing session is one of the most commonly recommended options. Most testing centers already have large queues, and you might get stuck in traffic. Wouldn’t it be convenient if the testing session was at your home, from the convenience of your living room? You can actually get tested at home, with a professional coming in for either antigen, PCR, or antibody test.

Not leaving home, in this case, is ideal, as it helps minimize the chances of you contracting the virus among the large crowd.

As with any pandemic, COVID-19 has had its fair share of hoaxes and myths. This has spread a lot of misinformation and paranoia among the general public. With regards to testing, there are many statements being thrown around which are simply not true.

Here’s all that you need to know about the myths around COVID-19 testing and the truth behind it all.

The Test is Painful

Getting a cotton bud swabbed around your nose or throat might not be the most fun experience, but by no means is it painful. You might cough or feel ticklish around your throat or have the urge to sneeze if your nose is being swabbed for a sample. In any case, it’s completely normal to feel this way.

The PCR or swab test is generally less than a minute long, depending on how cooperative you are. Even the antibody test, where blood is drawn from the body, doesn’t hurt a lot or take much time.

The Tests Are Completely Accurate

The simple reality is that no test will be completely accurate all the time, with human error being the major contributor to why tests fail or not work out properly as imagined. A common issue that’s observed in the PCR test is people test for the virus later on when the infection has already developed.

Swab tests can only find the virus and detect them in the earlier phases of infection, which means you should get tested as soon as you develop all the major symptoms.

Testing Is Only for Healthcare Workers

By no means is testing limited to a specific group of people, with even children being legible to get tested. Anyone suffering from the major symptoms of COVID-19 is recommended to get tested immediately. Whether you’re down with fever, have caught a cough, or you have experienced a change or loss in taste and smell, we recommend that you schedule a Covid-19 test right away.

It’s also recommended that you begin to isolate yourself if you experience any of the symptoms mentioned above.

Getting Tested Requires Extensive Traveling

One of the biggest misconceptions around Covid -19 testing is that it isn’t readily available. The reality is that most medical facilities, laboratories, and major public places are providing COVID-19 testing. In fact, you can even get in touch with various testing facilities to book a session for easy and reliable testing. These include corporate group testing, production testing, and at home testing.

Rather than you having to travel for a Covid-19 tests, most testing companies will offer to set up their own Covid-19 testing facilities at your premises.

Group COVID-19 testing can help screen and curb rapid transmission of the novel coronavirus. From schools, hospitals, and factories to corporate workplaces and production houses, you can get group testing services in Miami.

group COVID-19 test consists of several people pooling samples for a same day or next day RT-PCR test. If no person in the group is infected, the result comes out negative.

However, even if one person is COVID-19 positive, the entire result will be positive.

Group testing is an excellent way to curb the virus spread at workplaces. It helps organizations save time and money. By opting for an optimized group testing service in Miami, you can:

  • Estimate the prevalence of COVID-19 in your community

  • Encourage negative-tested groups to resume work activities

  • Manage COVID-19 cases proactively

The COVID-19 situation is still quite uncertain. Therefore, group testing has become a vital part of every organization’s COVID response policy.

Let’s find out about some other benefits of group COVID tests.

What is a Real Time RT–PCR?

Group COVID tests have proven successful in curbing the demand-supply gap in COVID testing resources. People have to wait weeks before getting their test results. This ultimately results in frustration and a higher risk of disease transmission.

As workplaces and restaurants reopen, a group testing service can be highly beneficial in tracing, tracking, and isolating COVID-positive people.

Cost-Efficient

Also known as pooled testing, a group COVID testing service uses a single test that’s administered to the entire group of people. Getting each individual tested with a separate testing kit is far more expensive than a group test.

The group testing scheme dates back to 1943. It was first used on WWII soldiers to detect syphilis cases. Today, we see it performing exceptionally well for tracking diseases like the Avian Flu.

The Bottom Line

COVID-19 timely prevention depends on the efficiency of testing services. Conventional testing won’t suffice if the government wants to reopen schools, offices, and mass trade at a global level. The Food and Drug Authority has also stated that using group COVID-19 testing, we can significantly increase mass testing numbers. And this can inversely impact the rate of transmission. Moreover, the time and expense aspects of group COVID tests outweigh it potential drawbacks.

Testing has played a significant role in protecting communities from rapid transmission.

Different types of COVID tests give different results. Our main focus today is on RT-PCR and antigen tests. These two types are the most commonly used COVID testing strategies. However, their reports may be a bit hard to understand.

Types of Tests Used to Detect the SARS-CoV-2

Currently, two types of COVID-19 tests that have proven to be highly effective in detecting COVID-19 include:

RT-PCR

RT-PCR, or the Gold Standard for COVID testing, is the most accurate test available today. There are two sub-types of RT-PCR: same day and next day test. However, the traditional PCR may take up to 72 hours, or even longer. The duration of your test result depends on the complexity and number of samples being analyzed.

Antigen tests

Antigen tests are faster but less accurate than RT-PCR. The time efficiency of an antigen test may affect the test result. A person carrying COVID-19 might not test positive in the early transmission days, thereby increasing the risk of virus transmission.

Breaking Down the Results

Here’s a complete list of possible COVID-19 test results and what they mean:

SARS-CoV-2 RNA Detected

If your RT_PCR reports states SARS-CoV-2 RNA detected, it means you’re positive. This shows that your sample contains viral RNA that caused the COVID-19 infection.

In this case, isolate yourself as soon as possible. Monitor your symptoms and stay in touch with your doctor via telemedicine platform. You may end your isolation if your symptoms alleviate and the last time you experienced fever or cough was at least 10 days ago.

SARS-CoV-2 RNA Not Detected

If you report says SARS-CoV-2 RNA not detected, it means you’re negative. Your sample did not contain any particles of the viral RNA. You are, however, still recommended to wear masks, practice social distancing, and maintain personal hygiene.

COVID-19 Antibody Test Result

An antibody test is used to detect whether a person has had COVID-19 in the past. It doesn’t tell whether you have an infection right now. However, an antibody test can be very helpful in determining the presence of antibodies.

Typically, COVID-19 antibodies develop in the human body after fourteen days of contracting the virus. A positive result indicates that you’ve had an infection before and you have antibodies in your blood. Whereas, a negative result suggests that you’ve not contracted COVID-19 in the past; hence there are no antibodies in your blood.

2021 brought a lot of positive COVID-related news to the fore. Thankfully, vaccines started rolling out, and Americans are getting their jabs as we speak! This also meant that traveling both internationally and domestically became a lot easier for vaccinated individuals. This is definitely good news for travel enthusiasts who were confined to their homes for the past year and a half.

However, the threat hasn’t gone away, and you still need to be cautious. Here are some of the considerations:

International traveling

As for those who have had COVID19 during the past three months, they need to show documentation of recovery and negative test results in order to travel to the US. Contrary to popular belief, there is no need to get retested for COVID after you arrive in the US—unless you have some symptoms. According to the CDC, you can test positive for COVID19 again for up to three months, but you won’t be infectious during this time.

Suppose you wish to travel outside of the US and are unaware of the travel regulations. In that case, we recommend reaching out to your destination’s Ministry of Health or Office of Foreign Affairs. The US Department of State might be able to help you out.

Domestic traveling

The CDC recommends delaying all sorts of unnecessary travel if you’re not fully vaccinated as of yet. You can only travel safely after you’ve had your jab from an FDA-authorized vaccine.

If you’re not vaccinated, you need to get tested at least 1 to 3 days before the trip. The CDC also recommends wearing your mask at all times, whether you’re traveling via buses, trains, planes, or any other mode of public transportation. Keep on washing or sanitization your hands as frequently as you can. Maintain social distancing while you’re traveling and avoid crowds.

After you’ve reached your destination, it’s recommended to get retested around 3 to 5 days after traveling. Even if you test negative, we still recommend self-quarantine for around a week. Self-monitor your symptoms during this time.

If you’re vaccinated, you still need to follow the physical distancing guidelines and practice hand hygiene.

Good Hearts Testing aims to make traveling within and outside the US a lot easier for you. If you’ve got to catch a flight the next day, we would be glad to arrange a same-day PCR test for you. Book an appointment if you’re in Miami.
